Welcome to the Valley of Fire

Less than an hour Northeast from Las Vegas, the Valley of Fire located in the Muddy Mountains is an explorers paradise and a photographers dream.

While there, you can easily kill a couple hours or a couple days, as there are many adventures to experience within the parks boundaries . There are plenty of hikes, great camping and endless rock formations to enjoy.

The name Valley of Fire is derived from the red sandstone formations, formed from shifting sand dunes over 150 million years ago during the age of dinosaurs, Intense uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created what we see today. Other important rock formations include limestone's, shale's, and conglomerates.

Past visitors of the Valley of Fire included the Basket Maker people and later the Anasazi Pueblo farmers from the nearby fertile Moapa Valley. Their span of approximate occupation has been dated from 300 B.C. to 1150 A.D.

Their visits probably involved hunting, food gathering, and religious ceremonies, although scarcity of water would have limited the length of their stay. Many fine examples of rock art left by these ancient peoples can be found at several sites within the park.
